Sapphire – the ideal coloured stone
Back in 2011 Kate Middleton’s amazing engagement ring sparked a new desirability for sapphires and recently at Ian Gallacher we have noticed a real buzz around them. There are always considerations involved when choosing a coloured stone and in our opinion sapphire is a top choice. Here’s why….
Sapphire is one of the main varieties of Corundum, a crystalline form of aluminium oxide with traces of iron, titanium and chromium. With a hardness of 9.0 on the Mohs scale its a great choice for durability.
A wide range of different colours are available including yellow, pink, purple, orange and green but the most commonly used is of course blue. Blue sapphires are available in many shades and qualities so there are always lots to choose from to find the right stone.
Coloured stones nearly always look best when accompanied by diamonds, whether in a cluster, three stone or solitaire with diamond shoulders. Blue sapphires look beautiful beside diamonds and some of the styles on display in the Ian Gallacher showroom are exquisite. Our selection of sapphire rings is extensive and caters for all budgets.
