Diamonds May Not Be Forever

While diamonds are famed for their resilient nature, the title of hardest material has always been up for grabs. Engineering research is always looking for the next contender, and a collaborative project may have found the winner, according to Scientific American.

Nanotwinned cubic boron nitride may not become a girl’s best friend, but a study led by Yanshan University in China has created nuggets of the ultrahard material that reportedly exceed diamonds in terms of hardness. Tests have shown that it has a Vickers score of 108 Gpa, 8 more than synthetic diamond and more than double the level of commercial versions of cubic boron nitride.
